The role
The Botanic Gardens of Sydney (BGoS) team is currently seeking to appoint a Senior Horticulturist Nursery to develop and maintain the horticultural functions for BGoS including undertaking regular inspections, maintenance of associated plant equipment and records, and consultation in relation to developments affecting living collections, natural areas or landscape development within the estates, and the supervision and training of staff.
We are looking for an enthusiastic horticulturist with a passion for plant conservation – particularly Australian native flora. In this role, you will effectively manage a team within the nursery, managing extensive horticultural potted collections, within a high use public garden – while prioritising the workload of the team to implement quality horticultural practices.

What you will bring to the role
- Demonstrated experience in the management of propagation programs, specialist propagation techniques, and collection of relevant records electronically.
- Experience in the provision of horticultural services and programs with a diverse range of plant materials grown in controlled environments and the maintenance/use of associated plant/equipment in accordance with nursery hygiene practices.
- Proven experience in the development and implementation of work and maintenance plans, and project management and research skills.
- Proven experience in the coordination, operational maintenance and team leadership in the nursery environment.
- Ability to optimise plant performance, including: nutritional requirements; knowledge of weed, pest and disease identification, and control using IPM strategies
- Experience with irrigation systems
- Maintenance and use of a wide range of horticultural plant and equipment.
- Knowledge and experience using computer software programs to record, maintain, and extract information.
What is an essential requirement:
- Horticultural trades certificate or equivalent skills and experience
- Current driver’s licence with the ability to drive manual vehicles and willingness to undertake fieldwork for extended periods of time and have the ability to lift and carry a minimum 15 kilos.
