The role
As the Supervisor of Horticultural Development, you’ll lead a team of staff and contractors to manage nursery operations and specialised displays including the Calyx, while providing design and planning functions for your assigned Botanic Garden. You’ll ensure that staff and resources are effectively deployed and that budgets are maintained to meet program priorities.

Your role will involve overseeing all aspects of nursery production, horticultural displays, and hardscape maintenance to uphold high standards of public presentation and safety. You’ll develop and review policies and procedures, manage commercial contracts, and monitor plant and equipment. Additionally, you’ll prepare briefings and reports to support decision-making and develop project proposals in collaboration with the Curator Manager and Landscape Designer.

What you will bring to the role

  • Proven team leadership experience, managing staff and contractors.
  • Expertise in nursery operations and hardscape development, including retaining walls and paving.
  • Strong background in developing and implementing horticultural and landscape maintenance policies.
  • Effective budget and resource management skills.
  • Experience preparing project proposals and managing commercial horticulture contracts.
  • Knowledge of Australian flora and plant propagation techniques.
  • Ability to lift 15kg

 


What is an essential requirement:

  • Horticultural trades certificate or degree or equivalent qualification, with demonstrated experience in the planning, scheduling and management of horticultural collections and displays.
  • Current driver’s license with the ability to operate manual vehicles.
