The Australian Botanic Garden Mount Annan is a scientific hub and showcases Australian flora amongst 416 hectares of rolling hills, lakes, lawns and gardens.

The role
Our busy Natural Areas and Open Spaces team are currently seeking a Horticulturist Natural Areas & Open Spaces. In this role, you’ll be responsible for maintaining and developing turf and horticultural areas across Australian Botanic Garden, Mount Annan site. You’ll focus on turf care, landscape construction, and managing plant collections, while also helping to supervise apprentices and contractors. Ensuring all work follows safety, environmental, and industry standards is key.

You’ll tackle challenges like managing pests, weeds, and irrigation across different grass varieties. You’ll also keep records of plant data to support horticultural development and provide useful information for visitors.

What you will bring to the role

  • Strong experience managing turf practices and leading a small team in a public garden setting.
  • Ability to balance turf management with heritage, conservation, safety, event, and horticultural challenges.
  • Background in sports turf (e.g. golf courses or sports fields) or experience working on fine turf (e.g. high-profile lawns) is  highly valued.
  • Crucial experience with tractor spraying and driving.


What is an essential requirement:

  • Certificate lll in Sports Turf Management or equivalent with experience in the maintenance and culture of turf and open spaces, pest and disease control, weed management, plant nutrition and irrigation control and in the maintenance and use of all associated plant and equipment.
  • Experience in park and garden maintenance.
  • Current driver’s licence with the ability to drive manual vehicles and willingness to undertake fieldwork for extended periods of time and have the ability to lift and carry a minimum 15 kilos.
  • Ability to work outside of normal working hours and on weekends if required.
